SAN SABASTIN

22/7/08 - 23/7/08
After an early morning run to the beach we packed the car and headed across the boarder to Spain.
SPAIN
Our first stop in Spain was San Sabastin were we found a camp site 6km out of town.....unfortunatly much too hilly to ride our bikes into town, so we took advantage of the very cheap bus and regular bus service.

The Basque cuisine is famous within Spain especialy there Pintxos. San Sabastians Old Quarter is well known for having the best Pintxos in Spain.

How To Eat Pintxos (Tapas)
Entering a Tapas bar can be an exciting but dunting experince if you are not familiar. With out being able to speak spanish the Tapas bar can be a confusing experince as Tom and I found out.

The first step is to decide what you would like to drink. The drinks avavlabile are ussaly writen on a board. Ask the bar man for you drink of chose then, time to eat.

If you wish to eat a few tapas, ask the barman for a plate, then take which ever tapas looks good. the confusing thing with tapas is there are no prices you will pay between about €2-4 each for cold tapas and around €5-6 for warm tapas. Warm Tapas must be ordered with the bar man who will heat it up or cook it for you. There is usaly a hot tapas menu on the wall. At some bars the prices are all the same for each tapas and others charge different prices for different pieces.

When you have finished eating and drinking you ask the barman for the bill, and you have to tell him what you have had to drink or eaten or how many pieces depending on how the bar is run.

The tradition is not to eat too many pinox at the one bar, but to move on to another bar to enjoy the atmospher and some new flovours. Traditionally locals would start at Pintox bars in the early evening for a light snak and drink before going out to a resturant for dinner.

BIARITZ

20/7/08 - 21/7/08
Today we drove on to the wealthy seaside town of Biaritz.

Were we stayed in a camping ground a short bike ride out of town, that was filled with teenagers on there summer holidays, who come to Biaritz for some surfing and fun in the sun.
The weather is now in the 40 degress and getting a little too hot for sleeping in the back of the car.
Tom was happy to get a chance to surf again after seeing his last waves in Australia.

On or first night in town we had dinner at the very busy but cheerful La Casa Juan Pedro a little restaurant with tables by the sea overlooking the Port des Pecheurs.
You can choose from a simple, short, good -value menu of grilled sardines, prawns, sea bream, hake, mussels and duck confit. Very relaxing with a carafe of Rose.
In the water bellow were giant fish the waiters would throw the left over bread too.

Tom looking very serious.......Stones on top of the sea walls.Biaritz at night.

LA ROCHELLE & ARCACHON

19/7/08
Exploring the sea side village of La Rochelle.
A Very beautiful town, swarming with tourists at the Saturday street markets.
Next we drove through the Bordeaux region but was not inspired by the area so we kept driving on to a place called Arcachon

At its southern entrance from the Atlantic ocean, Arcachon Bay is crowned by Europe's largest sand dune, the Dune de Pyla (or du Pilat), nearly 3 kilometres long, 500 metres wide, reaching 114 metres in height, and moving inland at rate of 5 metres a year.

We stayed in a camp ground called La Foret at the base of the largest sand dune....
Quite amazing and so much fun. Tom went for a swim on the other side in the Atlantic Ocean and then we watched the Sun Set.
Running up the sand dune was impossible, even for the fittest people.
Summer-salts in the sand....
