LA ROCHELLE & ARCACHON

19/7/08
Exploring the sea side village of La Rochelle.
A Very beautiful town, swarming with tourists at the Saturday street markets.
Next we drove through the Bordeaux region but was not inspired by the area so we kept driving on to a place called Arcachon

At its southern entrance from the Atlantic ocean, Arcachon Bay is crowned by Europe's largest sand dune, the Dune de Pyla (or du Pilat), nearly 3 kilometres long, 500 metres wide, reaching 114 metres in height, and moving inland at rate of 5 metres a year.

We stayed in a camp ground called La Foret at the base of the largest sand dune....
Quite amazing and so much fun. Tom went for a swim on the other side in the Atlantic Ocean and then we watched the Sun Set.
Running up the sand dune was impossible, even for the fittest people.
Summer-salts in the sand....
